What can caffeine do for you?
Most of us love a cup of tea or coffee and need the caffeine kick to get us going or keep us going. The popularity of so called energy drinks with high caffeine content has played to our desire for caffeine and increased its consumption with the younger generation.
Scientists have now confirmed that the caffeine we consume has a major influence on our memory and can help enhance it for up to 24 hours. That means just a couple of cups of coffee a day can have a pretty permanent affect.
A double-blind trial was conducted with participants who were not regular caffeine consumers. After studying sets of images for five minutes they were given a placebo or a 200-milligram caffeine tablet.
Tests comparing both groups’ ability to recognise and spot changes to the images showed that the group who took caffeine performed considerably better. The ability to spot the differences in the altered images is directly related to ones longer term memory retention.
It is a known fact that as we age our memory will gradually deteriorate. Anything we can do to help it before this starts can only be beneficial.
